Artistic Unity: Art in the UAE Issue #67
$20.00
As we leaf through the pages of the past four decades of art in the United Arab Emirates, it becomes evident that the art scene has undergone a remarkable transformation. From the humble beginnings narrated by the first galleries such as Majlis Gallery, Tabari Artspace, Salwa Zeidan Gallery and Green Art Gallery, to the vibrant tapestry of creativity that now defines the region, the journey is a testament to the unity that has shaped the artistic landscape. Tabari Artspace, one of the pioneering galleries in the UAE, stands as a living chronicle of the evolution of art in the region. Maliha Tabari’s reminiscences reveal a time when the art scene was nascent, and the idea of a flourishing artistic community was but a dream. The archival albums unveiled during our conversation provided a window into the past, showcasing the resilience and determination that laid the foundation for today’s thriving art scene. In our quest to unravel the threads of unity, we embarked on a journey to explore the perspectives of various stakeholders within the UAE’s art community. Through insightful interviews with galleries, art institutions, and auction houses, a vivid mosaic emerged, depicting how unity has been woven into the fabric of the art scene. Undoubtedly, a pivotal force driving this transformation has been the unwavering support of the government across the three emirates: Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. The visionary leadership has recognised the power of art in shaping cultural identity and fostering international dialogue. It is this support that has allowed galleries and institutions to flourish, providing artists with a platform to express themselves and contribute to the global conversation. Galleries, once solitary beacons, now stand as interconnected hubs, fostering collaboration and dialogue. Art institutions have become pillars of education and cultural exchange, while auction houses serve as conduits for artists to reach a global audience. The synergy between these entities reflects a shared commitment to nurturing and celebrating creativity. As we celebrate these decades of artistic growth in the UAE, it is crucial to recognise the individuals who have been trailblazers in this journey. Their dedication, coupled with
the collective support of the community, has transformed the desert landscape into a fertile ground for artistic expression. The unity in the UAE’s art scene is not just a convergence of styles and techniques; it is a shared vision, a commitment to fostering creativity, and a celebration of the diverse voices that make up this rich tapestry. As we turn the pages of this issue, let us revel in the achievements of the past, acknowledge the present, and eagerly anticipate the unfolding chapters of the UAE’s art scene in the years to come.
